In the heart of Milan, the redevelopment of the Allianz Group's historic headquarters represents an unprecedented opportunity to transform an architectural icon into a modern corporate campus. The project conceived by SOM for Corso Italia 23 aims to create a vibrant and innovative workspace, capable of respecting its historical legacy while adapting to the present and future needs of the company.
The building, originally designed in the 1960s by architects Gio Ponti, Piero Portaluppi and Antonio Fornaroli as the Milan headquarters of Allianz S.p.A., will be renovated to meet the needs of the future. The project introduces advanced concepts of environmental sustainability, wellness and smart building, while maintaining respect for Gio Ponti's original architecture.
The 23 Corso Italia campus will be transformed from an isolated corporate headquarters into a vibrant corporate campus representing the future of work. SOM's design uses the most advanced concepts of sustainability, flexibility, well-being and smart building, while maintaining a dialogue with the original design.
Allianz Real Estate and SOM share the belief that sustainability is not only about resource efficiency and operating costs, but also includes proactive design solutions that support health and well-being. The project aspires to meet both LEED® and WELL Gold Building standards, embracing all aspects of sustainability.
SOM's design aims to restore Gio Ponti's aspiration to create a sense of connection with the city and within the buildings, establishing a new identity for the campus. With a focus on people, an "inside-out" approach complements flexible and adaptable office spaces with a rich program of services that meet the needs of contemporary users.
Central spaces connect office floors vertically, offering tenants a variety of common areas. Meeting rooms, phone rooms, and lounge areas provide environments for collaboration and interactions that lead to new ideas. Inspiring outdoor spaces, such as the redesigned courtyard and rooftop terraces, complement the work experience by offering moments of relaxation and contact with nature.
SOM's approach to restoration balances legacy, innovation, cost, and sustainability. The degree of intervention on each building depends on its historical value and its specific role within the campus. SOM's design realizes a historic opportunity to revitalize the Corso Italia area as a new working district for the city, consolidating Milan as one of Europe's most vibrant metropolises and catalyzing future development.
