Milan is preparing to inaugurate a new chapter in the field of culture and education with the creation of the New European Library of Information and Culture (BEIC). This ambitious project, the result of collaboration between the City of Milan and GE.DI. Group SpA, represents a landmark for the academic and cultural world, as well as a symbol of innovation and progress.
The BEIC will be built in the eastern area of Milan, once the site of the Porta Vittoria railway yard, and will be strategically located close to the city's main universities, guaranteeing easy access thanks to its proximity to the stations of the Rail Loop and the new M4 subway line.
Funding for the project was included in the "Strategic Investment Plan on Cultural Heritage Sites, Buildings and Natural Areas" of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRP), with a budget of more than 100 million euros. The facility, which will cover an area of 30,000 square meters, is designed to be an example of sustainability and digital innovation.
The mayor of Milan, Beppe Sala, announced the start of construction work through his social channels, emphasizing that BEIC will not be a simple library, but a multifunctional complex that will include multipurpose rooms, exhibition spaces, coworking areas and areas dedicated to children. It is scheduled to open before the end of his term.
The structure will consist of two main volumes joined on the ground floor, with a design that reflects industrialism and harmony with its surroundings. A wide green corridor and tree-lined plaza will welcome visitors, while inside, the library will offer study, reading and reference rooms spread over six above-ground and two basement floors.
AZA will be in charge of the building envelope, which cubes a total of 10,000sqm.
