The Essex Crossing urban development project has resulted in Site 3, featuring an impressive 15-story tall glass building designed by the renowned firm CetraRuddy.
In keeping with the rest of the development project, the building aims to complement-rather than contrast-with the distinctive character of New York's Lower East Side. Its facade is the main distinguishing element, characterized by the use of different materials such as brick, white terra cotta and curtain walls. This aesthetic choice departs from the classical New York style, which is characterized by buildings with all-glass facades.
The entire Essex Crossing development will offer more than 1,000 residential units, new office space, and retail stores.
The apartment building located at 202 Broome Street will house a wide range of spaces, including residential units totaling 100,000 square feet, and retail space totaling 150,000 square feet. The ground floor features a 16,000-square-foot commercial space, known as the "modern bazaar." On the other hand, 75,000 square feet of office space is allocated from the second to the fifth floor.
Special attention was paid to researching multiple materials for the façade design. A special bronze-colored metal cladding was created for the basement, while the main element of the facade is the use of brick, white terracotta and metal extrusions to decorate the curtain wall units. This choice aims to recall traditional New York City materials, while the wave-shaped metal extrusions for the balconies mimic the pattern achieved with white terracotta. This approach gives the facade a distinct and innovative look, far from the stereotypical all-glass facades typical of New York City.
Essex Crossing Site 3 exemplifies innovative, urban-conscious design, helping to redefine the New York City skyline with a bold, contemporary vision.
