Cornell Tech is the name of a new technology and innovation campus of Cornell University, located on Roosevelt Island, New York. The campus covers 2.1 million square feet and houses several academic, residential and commercial facilities designed by several architectural firms. Prominent among them is the building by Handel Architects, known as The House at Cornell Tech, which is one of the most energy efficient in the world.
Handel Architects' building is a 15-story skyscraper housing 250 rooms for students and faculty. The building was designed according to Passive House standards, which drastically reduce energy consumption, creating a healthier and more comfortable environment for residents. The building is the tallest and largest in the world built to these standards, and saves 882 tons of CO2 per year.
The building's main feature is the façade composed of prefabricated panels that wrap around the structure like a thermal blanket with very high insulating power. The panels have a paint that changes color depending on the light, going from gray to gold; the façade then incorporates a system of louvers that extends the full height of the building, and acts as "gills," providing an outdoor space where the heating and cooling systems are located and allowing the system to breathe. Purified air is piped into each room, ensuring superior air quality.
The interiors are designed to provide a comfortable and stimulating living experience that fosters interaction and collaboration among guests, researchers, students, and the local community. The building offers several common spaces, both indoor and outdoor, to facilitate academic creativity and innovation.
