The city of Milan, already renowned for its cultural richness and dynamism, is further enriched with the opening of the new permanent headquarters of the Fondazione Prada, by acclaimed architect Rem Koolhaas. Located in Largo Isarco, south of the city center, this unique structure is an eloquent example of how contemporary architecture can blend harmoniously with the existing historical heritage.
Architecture as a dialogue between ancient and modern
Rem Koolhaas has transformed a distillery dating back to the 1910s into a futuristic architectural complex where old and new coexist in perfect harmony. The project, conceived by OMA Studio, involves the redevelopment of the early 20th-century gin distillery to include warehouses, workshops and fermentation silos. These elements, together with the three new buildings, surround a large courtyard, creating a unique spatiality that stimulates reflection and interaction.
In the words of Rem Koolhaas, the Prada Foundation represents neither a preservation project nor a new architecture, but rather a dynamic encounter between these two conditions. This state of permanent interaction offers a set of fragments that do not coagulate into a single image, allowing all parts to express their identity without overpowering the others.
A place for art and sharing
The Fondazione Prada complex is not only an oasis for art lovers, but also an open and welcoming space for all citizens. The outdoor spaces are completely free and accessible to anyone who wishes to walk through the complex, helping to promote cultural enjoyment and inclusiveness.
The facility houses a variety of buildings, including the Museum, a temporary exhibition space; the Cinema, a multimedia auditorium; and the Tower, a ten-story permanent exhibition space. The latter, currently under construction, promises to become a must-see for contemporary art lovers.
The Bar Luce: a tribute to Italy's cinematic past
One of the highlights of the Foundation is the Bar Luce, a magical place conceived by celebrated director Wes Anderson. Its interiors, inspired by 1950s Milan, transport visitors to a nostalgic and welcoming atmosphere. Formica seating, period furniture and a color palette rich in warm pastel tones create a unique setting reminiscent of Italian film masterpieces.
Anderson, known for his refined and nostalgic aesthetic, found inspiration in the great classics of Italian neorealism, such as Vittorio De Sica's "Miracle in Milan" and Luchino Visconti's "Rocco and His Brothers." These cinematic references blend harmoniously with the atmosphere of Bar Luce, creating a unique and unforgettable experience for visitors.
An opening to art and culture
The opening of the Fondazione Prada's new headquarters in Milan featured site-specific installations by internationally renowned artists such as Robert Gober and Thomas Demand, which strikingly dialogue with the industrial architecture and surrounding spaces. In addition, the exhibition "Serial Classic," curated by Salvatore Settis and Anna Anguissola, explores the relationship between originality and imitation in Roman culture, further enriching the cultural landscape offered by the Foundation.
