In the beating heart of Milan, among the striking perspectives of Gae Aulenti Square, rises the imposing figure of the E3 East building. An architectural work signed by the distinguished Arch. Mario Cucinella, this structure stands as a monument of connection between the effervescent urban fabric and the lush natural landscape around it.
Just as the majestic Porta Garibaldi invites the discovery of the XXV Aprile square, the E3 East building serves as a transitional filter between urban environments and the surrounding greenery. It is almost a portal that welcomes and guides the visitor to new architectural experiences and discoveries.
The project itself is articulated around the concept of fusion between the organic and the artificial. Fluid and harmonious spaces are married with bold structural elements, creating a dynamic balance between form and function. The 2,400-square-meter building is presented as a single entity, where large portals punctuate the rhythm of the structure, resulting in a striking pergola that overlooks the plaza and park.
The Urban Rhythm
The cadenced repetition of architectural elements generates a dynamic volume that blends seamlessly into the surrounding landscape. The building has four floors above ground, housing executive offices and a retail area on the ground floor. This arrangement, together with the tight and regular rhythm of the structural elements, creates a unique perceptual experience, enlivening the path leading from Piazza Gae Aulenti to the Varesine.
A Structural Excellence
The complexity of the structural design is evident in the rigorous connection with the existing structure, the three basement floors known as the "Podium." The structural setback at ground-floor level, along the side facing Via Melchiorre Gioia, testifies to the meticulous attention paid to the arrangement of spaces and their integration with their surroundings.
The Elegance of the "Sails"
The building's exterior cladding, characterized by glulam ribs, lends an aura of elegance and lightness to the structure. The gradual inclination in plan of the ribs creates an interesting divergent geometry with respect to the façade line, resulting in striking "sails" that stand out against the urban sky of Milan.
