The Nuages building in Paris 13 is an urban and architectural redevelopment project that transformed a 1970s residential complex into a modern and dynamic neighborhood with services, green spaces, and cultural activities. The project, designed by Compagnie de Phalsbourg in collaboration with architects ImmoCades and X-TU, was inspired by the shape of clouds and the poetry of movement, creating a new architectural identity for the Nanterre neighborhood in the western suburbs of Paris.
The Nuages building, which opened in 2017, involves the renovation of 125 apartments, 4 artist studios, 3 penthouses and 3 townhouses, spread over 11 residential towers, ranging in height from 50 to 100 meters. The towers, originally designed as uniform monolithic blocks, have been clad with a new façade, which creates a reflective and transparent effect thanks to variable dot silk-screening that produces different effects depending on the light and season. The facades have also been fitted with balconies and loggias, providing residents with private outdoor spaces and panoramic views of the city. In addition, the towers have been connected by pedestrian walkways and outdoor elevators, encouraging movement and social interaction among residents.
In addition to the renovation of the existing towers, the Nuages project also includes the construction of new buildings housing commercial, cultural and social functions. These include the new Nuage+ cultural center, located at the foot of the tallest tower in the complex. The cultural center is an open and dynamic space that offers residents and visitors a multipurpose hall, library, exhibition hall, coworking space, and a rooftop restaurant. The cultural center also has a large green terrace overlooking the public park adjacent to the building.
The Nuages building is thus an example of urban and architectural renewal aimed at improving the quality of life of residents and enhancing the architectural heritage of the neighborhood. The project is also an example of participation and co-creation among the actors involved: architects, residents, local associations, public institutions, and private partners. In fact, the Nuages building is the result of a process of consultation and dialogue among the various stakeholders, which allowed the needs and expectations of the future users of the neighborhood to be defined.
