In the heart of Luxembourg City, between the charming streets of Boulevard Royal and Grand-Rue, stands the majestic Royal Hamilius, a mixed development project developed by Codic International. This impressive complex, designed by Foster + Partners in collaboration with Tetra Kayser Associés, covers an area of 36,000 square meters, enriching the city's urban fabric and creating a new destination next to the UNESCO World Heritage site of the Old City of Luxembourg. AZA provided the cladding, mullion and transom facades, and window and door frames for buildings B4 and B5, which were designed for residential purposes.
A Dynamic Mix of Functions
Royal Hamilius is conceived as a multifunctional place that combines spaces for working, living and entertainment, transforming the area on the edge of the historic center into a vibrant urban neighborhood with a variety of social and civic spaces. The complex includes a large warehouse, offices, stores and apartments, creating a lively and vibrant neighborhood.
An Accent on History and Urbanity.
Designed as a gateway to the city's historic district, the Royal Hamilius is anchored by the historic Hotel des Postes, which forms the backdrop for a new civic square. The layout of the buildings maintains the main visual axis along Grand Rue and Avenue Monterey, echoing Luxembourg's existing urban identity and replicating its diversity of spaces. A 9,000-square-meter department store is located at the end of Grand Rue, with a public rooftop garden that offers panoramic views of the city and becomes a new destination for visitors and residents.
Sustainability and Innovation
The project boasts impressive sustainable credentials, aiming for a BREEAM - Excellent rating. It includes a "thermal labyrinth"-an innovative passive ventilation system that pushes warm air from outside through a labyrinth-shaped concrete chamber under the basement slab, using the concrete's high thermal mass to cool the air, which is then distributed throughout the buildings. The use of stone unifies the entire scheme, and all buildings feature accessible roofs with roof gardens.
The Future of Luxembourg Urbanism.
Royal Hamilius represents a milestone in Luxembourg's urban landscape, combining history, innovation, and sustainability to create a unique and vibrant urban space. With its iconic architecture and sustainable features, the Royal Hamilius stands as a model for future urban development, inspiring and transforming the city's urban fabric.
