The Getty is a residential and arts building located at 503 West 24th Street in the heart of New York's Chelsea Art District. Designed by Peter Marino Architect, the 12-story building houses 12 luxury apartments, an art gallery, and an exhibition space.
The building is inspired by the neighborhood's artistic and cultural context, where there are numerous art galleries, museums and artists' studios, as well as the famous High Line Park, an elevated promenade carved out of an old railroad line. The building aims to be a meeting point and dialogue between art, architecture and design, offering a unique and refined experience for residents and visitors.
The building's distinctive element is its façade, formed by metal and glass panels, which create an interplay of movement and light. AZA created and designed unique geometries for the façade structures, meeting the design requirements and rigorous performance criteria required for this project.
The facade was inspired by the kinetic art works of Jean Tinguely, a Swiss artist known for his mechanical moving sculptures. Metal panels were cut and bent to create irregular geometric shapes that change appearance depending on the angle and lighting. The glass panels were treated with a reflective paint, which creates plays of light and color. The facade was conceived as an ever-changing sculpture that adapts to the context and climate.
The interiors are designed to offer a high quality of living, reflecting the style and taste of the residents. The building offers different types of apartments, ranging from one to six bedrooms, with floor areas ranging from 167 to 557 square meters. The apartments feature fine finishes, such as wood, marble, and stone floors, and custom-made furniture. The apartments also have large windows, offering panoramic views of the city and the Hudson River.
The building also houses an art gallery, called The Getty, which covers 1,115 square meters and displays works by internationally renowned contemporary artists. The gallery is run by The Lehmann Maupin Gallery, one of New York's leading art galleries, which also has offices in Hong Kong and Seoul. The gallery is open to the public and organizes temporary and permanent exhibitions, as well as cultural and educational events.
